Racing Roundup for MAY 3
A Winter storm at J-Streetin Maywho would'a thunk it!
None of the Locals were prepared to Formula race in 20 knots, but that was the situation as Dave O'Connor, Lasse Uronen, Peter Jones, Mark Chandler, Tuan Nuyen, and Dave Dombrowski rigged up their smallest Formula gear, 9+ meter sails, for Saturdays event. Joining us again from up North were Joe Roth, Eric Christianson, and Gabor Vagi.
For the first two hours everyone had a blast playing with free-ride gear and it looked as though no one really wanted to commit to the big stuff and race. Finally, Joe grabbed the Windward Bouy and headed out to set it using his 9.8 and Devil 2. Dropping the mark ½ mile upwind (and taking just a few minutes to get there!), Joe flew back in showing us all that he and his Formula gear could handle the extreme (for San Diego) winds. This was enough to jump-start our event, and our 1st race started a short time later.
Our last April Champ, Gabor, was acting Rabbit for the start, and soon everyone was charging upwind. True to form as in April, the LA Sailors took the top three spots with Eric Christianson taking 1st, Gabor 2nd and Joe 3rd. San Diego's Dave O'conner placed 4th followed by Dave Dombrowski and Lasse Uronen.
With the wind slightly lower for the second Race, most people pulled out their 10+ meter sails. In this Race, Joe took 1st, followed by Eric and Gabor, with Dave O again taking 4th, Dave D 5th, and Peter Jones 6th.
The wind was quickly dropping as we managed to get in a final Race, and just like last month, the top spots were up for grabs. Gabor took 1st which tied him for 1st place overall with Eric, who finished 3rd behind a good showing by Dave O. Peter finished an impressive 4th, while Joe payed dearly for taking an early port flyer right into a massive hole. By the time he worked his way out, the fleet had horizoned him, so he picked up the windward mark (thanks Joe!) and brought it in.
Final Standings: Gabor and Eric tied for 1st, Dave O 3rd, Joe 4th, and Peter 5th.

Racing Roundup for April 5
Sometimes there's wind. Fortunately, Saturday, April 5th was a "sometimes" day!
With winds varying from a solid 14mph at noon down to a 9mph average at 2:30PM, we managed to get in 4 exciting races.
Participating were regulars Dave O'Connor, Lasse Uronen, Peter Jones, Mark Chandler, Robert Van, Tony Winkler, Tuan N'Guyen and Bruce Matlack. Also showing up to play were Long Beach Sailors Joe Roth, Eric Christianson, and Gabor Vagi.
Very conveniently, someone parked a house (on stilts) about ½ a mile upwind of our starting line. Our Course was a simple Windward-Leeward using the House as our windward mark (you don't here that too often!) and a pair of Channel Marker pylons as our Finish line. Joe Roth was the "Starting Rabbit" for Race 1. With about 12 to 16 mph winds, and a nice long Port Rabbit Run, everyone had a decent start. It was quickly obvious that the boys from Long Beach had been practicing. Chris, Gabor, and Joe quickly pulled away from most of the San Diego Fleet. Only Dave O'Conner managed to stay close, and ultimately finish an impressive 2nd behind Gabor. Joe and Eric took third and fourth with Lasse rounding out the top 5.
The Locals got "spanked" again in Race 2, with Joe, Eric, and Gabor easily outclassing the Field and placing 1,2,3 respectively. Dave managed 4th and Peter had a good race beating out Lasse for 5th.
With the wind starting to lighten up, the Long Beach Gang again played musical chairs for the win. This time Eric scored the Ace, closely followed be Joe and then Gabor. Dave snuck into 4th followed by Lasse 5th and Peter 6th.
The Day's top spot was still undecided going into the last (4th) race. With the average wind dropping to 9mph, Gabor caught a nice shift upwind and slipped past Eric for the win. Lasse ran an excellent race and held off Joe for 3rd, while Dave finished 5th ahead of Tony Winkler.
With his last race win, Gabor slipped past Joe and Eric to finish the day in 1st place, and Erik's 2nd pushed him past Joe into 2nd overall. Dave finished 4th; tops among the San Diego Fleet. With his 4th, Dave moved into the Season Overall Points Lead.

This from Joe Roth:
"Do to our response to last years race I will expand the racing in Long Beach to 4 races this year. The dates are: 5/24, 6/14, 7/12, and 8/16. All races will be held in Long Beach, same place as last year. Skippers meeting at 12:00 and first race, wind permitting, 12:30. In order to keep it simple I will keep the same format as last year; existing marks and rabbit starts. We might even have a beautiful trophy girl this year for the trophy presentation.
There will be no gear restrictions or classes at this time."
Those who attended the Races in Long Beach last year know what a blast it was. The wind was from 10 to 15, with only a small chop to contend with.
All racing is held inside the break wall. The course is a simple windward/leeward with a "Rabbit Start" by the beach and a large anchored barge as a windward mark (maybe ½ a mile upwind). Each race takes maybe 15 minutes. Plan on maybe 5 Races.
Be sure to bring a few dollars in quarters for parking.
These Races are posted on the Schedule, but will not count towards Points Standings.

Sunday, March 9th
Not an Event Day, but plenty of wind and participants for some informal Racing at the Hilton. Present were Dave Bark, Mark Chandler, Dave Domrowski, Dave Dominy, Peter Jones, Dave O'Conner, Lasse Uronen, Erik Van, and Robert Van.
Starting about 1:00 we ran a few Enchanted Isle Loops as well as some Windward-Leeward and Slalom Races. About 7 or 8 unofficial Races (with varying participation) were held in winds from 8 to 14mph. Overall a fun day for all. No record of finishes was kept.
1-5-2003
The wind was a no-show at J-Street (and all of SD) this weekend. A rising High over the four corners means that a Santa Anna is brewing. Not much good for our January Event though.
Thanks to all who showed and braved the 80 Degree, sunny weather. Kind of a fun bull session. Still, it would have been nice to get wet
Anyway, RACE ABANDONED for Jan. I hope to see you all at our Feb event at Bahia Point, 2/1. We're all still tied for 1st Place!
May the Wind Gods be merciful!
Robert
12-15-2002
Welcome to the San Diego Formula Windsurfing web site.
In 2002 our races have been loosely organized and handicapped. This has been successful to a point, but with our growing numbers (and skill) a more formal standard of Racing is necessary for 2003.
With this in mind, 10 of us met on Saturday, Dec 14th to discuss plans for the coming year. Resolved during this meeting were both a 2003 schedule of events as well as general rules and procedures relating to our events, summarized as below:
SCHEDULE
·
The 2003 Event Schedule is finalized. Event location varies between Hilton during warmer Months (thermal winds) and J-Street during cooler months. If J-Street tide falls below +1.0 feet between 12:00PM and 3:00PM, then Event is moved to Bahia Point (Mission Bay). Click here for schedule.
EVENT DETAILS
·
An Event is considered completed provided a minimum of one and a maximum of six races are finished.
·
Wind minimum for starting a race is 8mph (average measured for 10 minutes immediately preceding race)
·
Once started, a race will have no wind minimum.
·
An Event day will be abandoned if, between 12:00PM and 3:00PM, average wind speed is insufficient to start a race.
·
Once abandoned, a Saturday Event day will automatically be rescheduled for the following day (Sunday). If the wind minimum is not met for the rescheduled Event, then the Event will be considered cancelled.
·
Participants present at the abandonment of a Saturday Event can vote to relocate the rescheduled event, providing that at least one participant agrees to e-mail participant community, or the new location is posted on this web site.
·
For races where a Committee Boat is not available, a Rabbit start will be used. First Race Rabbit will be participant with the third highest points ranking. The Rabbit for each following Race will be the third to finish participant from the previous race.
SCORING
·
No handicapping will be used for the first six (scoring) races of an event.
·
Participant's scoring from a Race will be the sum of one point for participation, and one point for every participant defeated in a Race.
·
Participant's scoring from an Event will be the sum of the first through sixth Races. One throw-out Race will be deducted from Event Total points if at least four Races are completed.
·
The Winner of an Event is the Participant with the highest point total.
There will be one throw out Event for every 4 Events completed.
The 2003 Champion will be the Participant with the most Event Points.
PENALTIES
·
IYRU (ISAF) rules apply. One 360 turn, completed as soon as safely possible, will resolve an infraction.
·
Any outstanding Protests will be resolved by uninvolved participant vote at the end of the Event.
EQUIPEMENT
·
Any sailboard is allowed providing it does not have a centerboard
·
Any sail sized 12.5 sq meter or less may be used
·
Any fin may be used
COURSES RACED
·
Racecourse will be determined at Event site by vote of Participants.
DIVISIONS
·
Currently there is only an Open division. Three or more Participants would be needed to constitute a separate division, and inclusion of any separate divisions would first require ratification by vote of a majority of all Event Participants.
